The Labour Party has thrown its weight behind the State Police Bill recently passed by the Senate. The party described the development as a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. The opposition party specifically applauded the Senate for its speedy consideration and approval of the proposed legislation.
According to the party, the bill reflects growing demands from Nigerians for a more efficient security structure. It noted that citizens across the six geopolitical zones have consistently called for policing reforms that can respond more effectively to local security challenges.
The Labour Party also acknowledged the role played by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in transmitting the constitutional amendment proposal to the National Assembly.
Party leaders argued that the current security environment requires fresh strategies and institutional reforms. They said a decentralised policing system could help authorities respond faster to emerging threats.
Concerns Over Abuse Addressed
While supporting the bill, the Labour Party recognised concerns raised by critics of state policing.
Some stakeholders have warned that governors could misuse state police formations for political purposes. They often point to controversies surrounding State Independent Electoral Commissions and allegations of political interference at the state level.
Despite these concerns, the party maintained that the country’s present security realities justify the introduction of state police.
According to the statement, lawmakers included safeguards in the proposed amendment to prevent abuse and ensure accountability.
“The Labour Party is particularly encouraged by the constitutional safeguards embedded in the amendment Bill, especially the provisions contained in Section 17, which establish clear mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure accountability in the operation of state police,” the statement said.
The party expressed confidence that these provisions would help protect the integrity of the proposed policing structure.
Party Highlights Need for Decentralised Policing
The Labour Party stressed that no policing system is perfect. However, it argued that the shortcomings of Nigeria’s highly centralised security model have become increasingly evident.
The party noted that rising criminal activities across different regions highlight the need for innovative security solutions. It added that decentralised policing could improve intelligence gathering and strengthen local responses to crime.
Furthermore, party officials said state police could bring law enforcement closer to communities. They believe local knowledge and faster decision-making could improve public safety.
The statement also suggested that a well-regulated state police system would complement federal security agencies rather than replace them.
According to the party, stronger cooperation between federal and state institutions could enhance overall security outcomes across the country.

With Senate approval secured, the constitutional amendment now moves to the next stage of the legislative process.
The bill requires endorsement by state Houses of Assembly before it can proceed for presidential assent.
As a result, the Labour Party has called on governors and lawmakers in all 36 states to support the proposal. The party urged political leaders to place national security above partisan interests.
It argued that broad support for the legislation would help create a more effective policing framework capable of tackling modern security threats.
