Resident doctors at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, have suspended their three-day warning strike and directed members to resume work on Thursday amid demands for improved electricity and water supply at the hospital.

The Association of Resident Doctors, UCH, announced the decision in a memo issued to members and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Thursday.

The memo was jointly signed by the association’s President, Dr Uthman Adedeji, and General Secretary, Dr Mary Awodiji.

“Sequel to the resolutions of the Emergency General Meeting (EGM), held on Thursday, Oct. 8, members are hereby informed that the 3-day warning strike has been completed.

“Consequently, work resumes today, Thursday, Oct. 15, by 8.00 a.m.,” the memo said.

The association urged members to return promptly to their respective duty posts, adding that updates would be communicated to the congress at stipulated times in the coming days.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the doctors began the three-day warning strike on Monday over persistent electricity disruptions and chronic water shortages around the College of Medicine axis of the hospital.

The association is demanding the immediate restoration of electricity to the affected area, urgent repairs to faulty circuit breakers for backup power and uninterrupted electricity supply across all parts of the hospital.

It also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the UCH management, running from October 12 to October 19, warning that it could embark on an indefinite strike if its demands were not met.

The suspension of the warning strike comes as the association continues to press the hospital management to address the infrastructure problems affecting working conditions at the facility.
