OAU University Duel Champions became a trending topic after Obafemi Awolowo University secured victory in the 2026 University Duel competition.

The institution defeated the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in a commanding final performance. The competition showcased some of Nigeria’s brightest students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The grand finale took place at TenOone Studios in Lagos on April 19, 2026.

OAU Defeats FUTA In Dominant Final

Obafemi Awolowo University delivered an outstanding performance to defeat FUTA by 107 points to 62.

The victory earned the institution the coveted University Duel trophy for 2026.

FUTA finished as the first runner-up after an impressive journey through a highly competitive field of universities.

Meanwhile, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, secured third place.

UNN fought back strongly to overcome the University of Ibadan in the third-place contest.

The result marked a major achievement for the Great Ife team.

The University Duel brought together students from 62 universities across the country.

A total of 186 undergraduates participated in the competition.

Backed by MTN Nigeria, the programme focuses on strengthening STEM education and preparing students for opportunities in the digital economy.

Contestants competed in several categories, including Applied Mathematics, Data Analysis, Verbal Reasoning, and General Knowledge.

Organisers designed the contest to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical digital skills.

OAU Team Delivers Winning Performance

The victorious OAU team featured Adrian Lekan from the Department of Computer Science.

He competed alongside Electrical and Electronics Engineering students Alli Abdul-Quayum and Ogungbayi Imran.

The trio displayed speed, teamwork, and technical excellence throughout the competition.

Their performance helped OAU improve on its third-place finish in the inaugural edition.

The students remained composed under pressure and delivered when it mattered most.

MTN Highlights Importance Of STEM Education

Speaking at the event, MTN Nigeria’s Campaign Management Digital Manager, Moyosola Omoniyi, stressed the importance of investing in STEM education.

According to her, technological advancement depends on developing young talents with the right skills.

She noted that Nigeria’s future growth will rely heavily on students who can drive innovation and digital transformation.

Omoniyi explained that competitions like the University Duel help prepare students for leadership roles in the technology sector.

Organisers Praise OAU’s Exceptional Display

Chams Corporation Plc Chief Executive Officer, Olufemi Oyenuga, commended the quality of competition displayed during the event.

He described OAU’s performance as extraordinary.

According to him, the university demonstrated remarkable depth in STEM knowledge and maintained a high level of intensity throughout the contest.

Although FUTA staged a spirited comeback during the middle stages of the final, OAU maintained control.

The team eventually secured victory during the collaborative Pickbox round.

OAU’s total of 107 points became one of the competition’s standout achievements.

The score reflected the team’s strong grasp of technical concepts and problem-solving skills.
