Ogun State has recorded a sharp increase in tourism revenue following the renovation of Olumo Rock in Abeokuta. The government says the site, once underperforming, is now generating significantly higher income.

Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed that the tourist centre was temporarily closed to allow for refurbishment aimed at improving its appeal and economic value. Speaking at a road commissioning event in Abeokuta, he explained that the intervention has transformed the site’s financial performance.

Before the upgrade, Olumo Rock reportedly generated just about ₦3 million annually. According to the governor, that figure has now jumped to roughly ₦10 million weekly, translating to around ₦40 million monthly since reopening.

The state also introduced a free-entry period after the renovation to attract visitors and reintroduce the landmark to the public. This move led to a surge in attendance, boosting local activity around the site. However, the free access was later discontinued due to overcrowding and safety concerns.

To maintain growth and improve management, the government has since moved to concession the facility to a private operator. The aim is to ensure better structure, sustainability, and consistent revenue generation.

Olumo Rock remains one of Nigeria’s most recognised cultural landmarks and continues to play a central role in Ogun State’s tourism strategy.

The overhaul of Olumo Rock shows how targeted investment in tourism infrastructure can significantly improve revenue and visibility.
