Minister of State for Defence Bello Mohammed Matawalle has called on his political associates in Zamfara State to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to tackle banditry and insecurity.
Matawalle made the appeal during an interactive meeting with former members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, former commissioners, special advisers and other political associates.
The meeting was held in Kaduna over the weekend.
It brought together members of the political structure that worked with Matawalle during his tenure as Zamfara State governor between 2019 and 2023.
Security, political developments and the progress of Zamfara were among the issues discussed at the meeting.
However, the gathering also provided an opportunity for Matawalle to rally his former political allies behind the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Matawalle speaks on insecurity
The Minister of State for Defence said protecting lives and property must remain a priority for every responsible government.
He maintained that the Federal Government was committed to defeating banditry and restoring peace to communities affected by insecurity.
According to Matawalle, the Tinubu administration has placed national security high on its agenda.
He also pointed to the President’s continued consultations and engagements on security issues as evidence of his commitment to addressing the challenge.
Matawalle said the administration would continue to focus on insecurity while pursuing economic development, peace and national unity.
He urged his political associates to communicate the government’s message to people at the grassroots.
Focus shifts to 2027
Beyond security, the meeting also had a clear political dimension.
Matawalle asked his former political associates to mobilise support for the Tinubu Again Movement across Zamfara.
He also urged them to work towards strengthening support for the President’s bid for another term in office in 2027.
The former governor has continued to maintain a political network in Zamfara despite his move to the Federal Executive Council.
Leaders of the groups represented at the meeting praised him for maintaining ties with his former political structure.
They described his continued engagement with supporters as evidence of his influence within the state.
Supporters pledge backing
The political leaders at the meeting pledged to support Tinubu’s political efforts.
They also promised to promote the achievements of the administration and communicate its policies to their respective constituencies.
The leaders linked the success of Tinubu’s administration with the political interests of their supporters and communities.
They further commended Matawalle for what they described as his continued concern for the welfare and aspirations of his political associates.
The mobilisation comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
For Matawalle, the meeting offered an opportunity to combine his current national role with efforts to maintain his political influence in Zamfara.
His message to his former associates was clear: support the Federal Government’s security agenda and help build stronger grassroots backing for Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election.
