Nigeria’s telecommunications industry is experiencing another major growth phase as millions of new SIMs come online and data consumption continues to rise.
Telecom operators added more than 12.8 million new SIMs in seven months, while Nigerians consumed about 10.2 million terabytes of data during the same period.
The growth comes as MTN Nigeria reaches a major milestone of its own.
MTN’s subscriber base climbed to a record 100.86 million in July 2026, making it the first telecommunications operator in Africa to cross the 100 million-subscriber mark. The figures came from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
MTN Nigeria subscribers cross 100 million
MTN added 2.22 million subscribers between June and July.
Its customer base rose from 98.64 million in June to 100.86 million in July.
The increase strengthened MTN’s position as Nigeria’s largest mobile network operator.
Airtel followed with 66.76 million subscribers. Globacom had 23.63 million, while 9mobile recorded 3.61 million.
Together, the operators accounted for 195.11 million active mobile subscriptions in July.
That figure increased from 192.23 million in June, representing a monthly addition of about 2.88 million active lines.
MTN therefore controlled about 51.7 per cent of Nigeria’s active mobile subscription market in July.
Nigerians consume 10.2 million terabytes
The rise in subscriptions is happening alongside a sharp increase in data usage.
Nigerians consumed approximately 10.2 million terabytes of data within seven months, according to the latest industry figures reported by The Guardian.
That volume shows how deeply mobile connectivity has become part of everyday life.
Nigerians now rely on mobile networks for social media, video streaming, digital banking, online shopping, remote work and business communication.
Platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and Netflix also continue to drive demand for faster and larger data connections.
The growing use of fintech services and mobile commerce is adding further pressure on telecom networks.
Data revenue follows the growth
The surge in consumption is also creating a major revenue opportunity for operators.
MTN Nigeria recorded N1.699 trillion in data revenue during the first half of 2026, according to industry reports.
The figure represented a 38.3 per cent increase from N1.229 trillion recorded in the same period of 2025.
MTN also had 55.7 million active data users during the period.
Average monthly data consumption per MTN data user reached 14.8GB, showing that the company’s growing subscriber base is also becoming increasingly data-focused.
Airtel Nigeria recorded similar growth in customer data usage, with average monthly consumption rising to about 11GB.
Nigeria’s mobile market continues to recover
The latest numbers also point to a recovery in Nigeria’s mobile telecommunications market.
The industry suffered a major decline after the enforcement of the National Identification Number and SIM linkage requirements led to the disconnection of millions of lines.
However, subscriber numbers have gradually recovered.
Nigeria’s July total of 195.11 million active subscriptions remains below the more than 200 million lines recorded before the full impact of the NIN-SIM enforcement exercise.
The latest growth suggests that the market is rebuilding its customer base while demand for digital services continues to expand.
More subscribers mean more pressure on networks
The rapid growth also comes with challenges.
More subscribers and heavier data usage require operators to increase network capacity and improve infrastructure.
Telecom companies have therefore continued investing in towers, fibre networks, transmission equipment and newer technologies.
The NCC has also reported increased investment in telecommunications infrastructure as operators work to handle rising traffic. A recent NCC-related report noted that operators and tower companies invested about N2.5 trillion in network infrastructure and upgrades during 2025.
However, consumers continue to complain about slow internet speeds, network interruptions and rapid data depletion.
As usage grows, operators will face increasing pressure to deliver better service while keeping networks affordable for consumers.
MTN milestone reflects a changing market
MTN’s 100 million subscriber milestone provides a clear picture of how quickly Nigeria’s telecom market is evolving.
The company moved from 98.64 million subscribers in June to more than 100 million in July.
At the same time, Nigeria added millions of active lines across the wider market and recorded massive growth in data consumption.
The figures show that Nigerians are not simply connecting more devices and SIMs. They are also spending more time and money on digital services.
For telecom operators, that creates a huge commercial opportunity.
For consumers, however, the growth raises a different question: can network investment keep pace with Nigeria’s rapidly increasing appetite for connectivity?
For now, the numbers point to a telecom market that is getting bigger, more data-driven and increasingly central to Nigeria’s digital economy.
