The Federal Government has approved full payment of the lecturers’ tools allowance covering January to August 2026.
The payment covers academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Wednesday.
He spoke shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation.
Government releases eight months of CATA payment
The allowance is known as the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, or CATA.
It supports academic staff who need essential tools and materials for their work.
These materials can support teaching, research and other academic activities.
According to Alausa, the payment follows the 2025 Federal Government agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the agreement.
“The full CATA payment has now been released by the Federal Government from January to August 2026,” Alausa said.
He added that the funds covered all federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The minister said institutions had received notification to begin payments to eligible academic staff.
Non-academic staff payment still pending
The government also addressed payments for non-academic staff.
Alausa said the process was already underway.
However, the funds for that category had not yet reached all institutions.
He expressed hope that the money would become available within the next few weeks.
“We’re hoping that these funds will be made available, hopefully, in the next few weeks,” the minister said.
The statement places the CATA payment ahead of the expected release for non-academic workers.
