OPay has unveiled the technology infrastructure powering its digital payment platform as the fintech company sets its sights on reaching one billion users worldwide.
The company said its new tech engine has increased transaction success rates to 99.9 percent. It also reduced payment processing times to less than one second. OPay shared the update during a media briefing in Lagos.
Company executives also outlined plans to support 10 million merchants globally. In addition, they announced the expansion of the company’s ₦1.2 billion youth scholarship programme.
Chief Commercial Officer Elizabeth Wang said OPay has invested heavily in technology and innovation over the years. According to her, customers only see successful transfers. However, advanced engineering systems make those transactions possible behind the scenes.
She explained that the company’s goal is to make digital payments so reliable that customers never have to think about the technology powering every transaction.
Wang also stressed that trust remains essential for financial inclusion. She said people use digital financial services more confidently when they trust the platforms. She added that stronger trust can drive long-term economic growth.
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer Dotun Adekunle explained how OPay improved its payment infrastructure. He said the company removed payment bottlenecks by introducing direct switching links, multiple infrastructure backups, and automatic failover systems.
According to Adekunle, OPay always begins with the customer experience. He noted that every failed transaction, delayed payment alert, or security issue becomes an engineering problem that the company works to eliminate.
He also explained that payment speed and reliability matter most when customers make purchases at merchant locations. Therefore, OPay designed its technology to operate quietly in the background while delivering fast and secure transactions.
“Our job is to make technology almost invisible,” Adekunle said. He added that customers should simply expect their money to arrive quickly, securely, and without interruption whenever they press the send button.
The company also highlighted its fraud prevention strategy. OPay tech engine now uses a risk-based security framework supported by several in-house technologies. These include Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield, Emergency Lock, and an AI-powered Anti-Scam Shield.
Adekunle said the platform detects changing risk levels without disrupting customers’ everyday transactions. As a result, users receive stronger protection while continuing to enjoy fast and convenient payment services.
Beyond technology, OPay reaffirmed its commitment to education and community development. Wang announced the expansion of the company’s 10-year ₦1.2 billion OPay Scholars Programme.
The initiative now includes a National Innovation Challenge organised in partnership with Google and the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme. The competition aims to encourage innovation while helping young Nigerians develop digital skills.
According to Wang, technology should create opportunities beyond business growth. She said every innovation should strengthen financial inclusion, build customer trust, and create more opportunities for people to participate in the digital economy.
With faster payment processing, stronger security systems, and continued investment in youth development, OPay tech engine believes it is well positioned for its next phase of global expansion. The company hopes its latest technological upgrades will support its ambition of serving one billion users while expanding digital financial services across more markets.
