The United Kingdom has released an updated list of banned and restricted items that travellers cannot bring into the country in 2026.
The updated guidance forms part of the UK’s border and customs regulations. Officials warned that customs officers will seize prohibited goods at the border. They also cautioned that travellers who ignore the rules could face prosecution.
According to the guidance, authorities ban certain items because they threaten public safety, public health, wildlife conservation, or the environment.
The list of prohibited items includes controlled drugs, offensive weapons such as flick knives, and self-defence sprays like pepper spray and CS gas.
Authorities also ban endangered animal and plant species, rough diamonds, and indecent or obscene materials. These materials include some books, magazines, films, and DVDs.
In addition, the UK prohibits travellers from bringing personal imports of meat and dairy products from most countries outside the European Union. The restriction aims to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
Some items are not completely banned. However, travellers must obtain the required permits or licences before bringing them into the UK.
These restricted items include firearms, explosives, and ammunition. Customs officials will not allow travellers to import them without proper documentation.
Food and plant products also face strict controls. Authorities may refuse entry if the items contain pests or diseases. They may also reject products intended for commercial use instead of personal use.
Officials can also refuse food and plant products that were not grown within the European Union when they fail to meet import requirements.
The updated guidance also targets counterfeit and pirated goods. Customs officers can seize fake branded products and unauthorised copies of films, music, and other copyrighted materials.
Authorities warned that people who import counterfeit goods could face legal action for violating intellectual property laws.
