The Nigeria Food Security Scholars Programme has provided research grants to 25 final-year students of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Abuja. The initiative awarded project-based grants worth N3.211 million to support studies aimed at tackling Nigeria’s food security challenges.

The programme forms part of the Nigerian Food Security Project. It seeks to encourage practical research that can deliver solutions for the country’s agricultural sector.

University of Abuja Students Receive Research Grants

The beneficiaries received certificates of participation alongside financial support for their projects. Their studies cover several critical areas.

These areas include food security, climate resilience, agricultural supply chains and sustainable food systems. Other projects focus on reducing post-harvest losses and addressing related challenges affecting agricultural productivity.

According to a statement obtained on Sunday, the scholarship presentation ceremony attracted key officials of the university. Those present included the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, lecturers and other stakeholders within the faculty.

Programme Targets Practical Solutions

Director of the Nigerian Food Security Project, Ajibola Oladiipo, said the initiative aims to ensure that academic research addresses real-life food security concerns.

He explained that the programme promotes studies that respond directly to challenges facing Nigeria’s food system.

“We strongly believe in the value of research and want to ensure that research emerging from academic institutions is grounded in the realities of food security challenges.

“Our goal is to encourage students to align their projects with practical solutions that can contribute to addressing food security issues. We are committed to funding and scaling solutions that are commercially viable,” Oladiipo said.

He noted that the initiative intends to identify innovative ideas with the potential for commercial growth and long-term impact.

Faculty Dean Highlights Importance of Initiative

The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Akeem Oyerinde, described the programme as part of wider efforts to combat food insecurity through innovation and research.

According to him, the university selected 25 outstanding students to participate in the scheme.

He explained that the students would focus on issues such as women and youth participation in agriculture. Their projects also address post-harvest loss reduction and other food security concerns.

“The primary goal of the initiative is to address food insecurity in Nigeria through research. We were asked to select 25 outstanding students who would receive support to research food security issues, including women and youth participation in agriculture and post-harvest loss reduction,” he said.

Oyerinde revealed that the beneficiaries have been grouped into thematic research clusters. He added that the studies are already underway and are expected to provide practical recommendations for the agricultural sector.

Students to Receive Mentorship and Coaching

Professor Oyerinde described the support as highly beneficial to both the students and the institution. He noted that the initiative marked a first for the University of Abuja.

“This is the first time that this has happened in the university. The support is highly impactful on both the students and the institution. Our goal is to produce agricultural professionals who can drive innovation and contribute to solving food insecurity challenges,” he added.

Under the programme, faculty supervisors will guide the students throughout their research projects. In addition, participants will take part in quarterly coaching and review sessions organised by the Supply Chain Research and Innovation Hub.

The Nigerian Food Security Project operates as an initiative of the Supply Chain Research and Innovation Hub. Through collaborations with tertiary institutions and industry stakeholders, the project seeks to boost agricultural research, strengthen food security and improve productivity across Nigeria.

The Nigeria Food Security Scholars Programme represents another effort to promote innovation within Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By supporting young researchers at the University of Abuja, the initiative hopes to generate practical solutions that can improve food production, reduce losses and strengthen food security nationwide. The programme also aims to nurture future agricultural professionals capable of driving sustainable development.
