The UNIMED International Career Centre has emerged as a major initiative aimed at preparing students for opportunities in the global labour market. The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, introduced the specialised centre in partnership with the Canadian Education Council (CEC). Through the initiative, the institution hopes to close the gap between classroom learning and the skills employers demand across international healthcare systems.
UNIMED Strengthens Global Employability Drive
UNIMED unveiled the International Career Centre during a ceremony held in Ondo town, Ondo State. The university said the facility would help students develop competencies that align with international standards.
The institution explained that the centre marks a shift from traditional academic instruction to practical and competency-based career preparation. As a result, students will gain access to programmes designed to improve their competitiveness in the global workforce.
In addition, the initiative seeks to produce healthcare professionals who can work effectively across borders and adapt to changing healthcare systems.
Canadian Education Council Explains Partnership Goals
Speaking during the inauguration, the Country Director of the Canadian Education Council, Dr John Adeniyi, outlined the organisation’s mission in Nigeria.
According to him, the council aims to bridge the disconnect between university education and the expectations of employers around the world. He noted that the organisation establishes international career centres within Nigerian universities to support that objective.
Adeniyi said the approach enables students to acquire employability skills that meet international standards. He added that participants would also receive accredited professional certifications and practical training required in diverse work settings.
Furthermore, the centre will expose students to workplace practices commonly used in North America and other regions. It will also provide career development support and pathways for professional growth.
Vice-Chancellor Highlights Benefits for Students
Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, described the launch of the centre as an important step in the university’s long-term development strategy.
She said the facility would connect academic knowledge with professional practice. According to her, students will benefit from career guidance services, leadership development programmes and employability training.
The vice-chancellor added that mentorship opportunities and internship placements would form part of the centre’s activities. She also noted that students would gain exposure to international best practices.
Adejuyigbe explained that the collaboration with the Canadian Education Council aligns with UNIMED’s vision of producing healthcare professionals and leaders capable of driving innovation and creating value.
Commitment to Future-Ready Healthcare Professionals
Prof. Adejuyigbe stressed that the project reflects the university’s commitment to raising graduates with practical abilities and a global outlook.
She stated: “The establishment of this centre is a reaffirmation of our commitment to nurturing healthcare professionals and leaders who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the practical skills, international outlook and entrepreneurial mindset needed to succeed in today’s competitive global environment.”
She further noted that the initiative would improve the career prospects of students. Moreover, she said the programme would prepare graduates for success in a rapidly evolving healthcare sector.
