The Tinubu Health Projects initiative has reached a significant milestone with the commissioning of new and upgraded healthcare facilities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu unveiled the projects as part of activities marking the third anniversary of his administration.

The nationwide programme includes specialist hospitals, emergency medical response assets, primary healthcare centres, laboratories, and immunisation infrastructure. Government officials say the projects will strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services across the country.

Tinubu Unveils Specialist Medical Complex in Abuja

One of the major highlights of the commissioning exercise was the inauguration of the Bola Tinubu Specialist Complex at the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the newly completed facility was designed to provide integrated specialist and VIP healthcare services.

The two-storey complex features eight consulting rooms and two theatre suites. It also includes dedicated Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat departments.

Additionally, the facility houses a fully equipped laboratory, a pharmacy, nine VIP wards, four general wards, and a private clinic designed to enhance patient care.

Officials believe the centre will improve access to advanced healthcare services and reduce the need for medical travel abroad.

Emergency Ambulance Fleet Boosts Medical Response

As part of the Tinubu Health Projects, the President also commissioned a large fleet of emergency response vehicles and digital equipment.

The fleet consists of 145 tricycle ambulances, six boat ambulances, and 79 new emergency ambulances designated for federal tertiary hospitals nationwide.

Furthermore, the government supplied 45 laptops, 20 printers, and 320 mobile phones to support the digital coordination platform of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS).

Authorities explained that the emergency vehicles will operate under the SAVEMAMA programme. The initiative focuses on providing emergency obstetric and newborn healthcare services to vulnerable communities.

As a result, residents in rural, riverine, and hard-to-reach areas are expected to benefit from faster emergency medical interventions.

New Health Facilities Commissioned Across Regions

The commissioning exercise extended to several states and healthcare institutions across Nigeria.

In the North-West, the government commissioned three Polio Emergency Operations Centres located in Katsina, Kano, and Sokoto states.

The centres were originally established in 2013 with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and managed by eHealth Africa. They have now undergone expansion, renovation, and equipment upgrades.

President Tinubu also commissioned the newly constructed Gadon Kaya Primary Health Centre in Kano State’s Gwale Local Government Area.

The facility was developed under the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project.

Teaching Hospitals Receive Major Upgrades

Several tertiary healthcare institutions also received new facilities under the programme.

At the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Akwa Ibom State, the President commissioned a new two-storey laboratory complex.

The facility contains 16 specialised laboratories, seminar rooms, a library, call rooms, and office spaces for staff.

Meanwhile, the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, received a newly completed administrative complex. The inauguration took place through a hybrid virtual ceremony.

At the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, Zaria, Kaduna State, the President commissioned a Pharmacy Quality Control Laboratory.

The laboratory provides quality assurance services for medicines entering the hospital. It operates through dedicated Microbiology, Chemistry, and Instrumentation units while complying with British Pharmacopoeia and United States Pharmacopoeia standards.

Mental Health and Immunisation Infrastructure Expanded

In the North-East, President Tinubu commissioned a new Mental Health and Drug Rehabilitation Centre at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

The 50-bed facility focuses on treating psychological conditions and drug-related disorders. Officials noted that the centre will support communities affected by years of conflict and trauma.

Similarly, in the South-West, the President inaugurated the Lagos Immunisation Supply Chain Hub at the Federal Medical Stores in Oshodi.

Constructed through the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project, the facility represents the first completed centre under Nigeria’s Three-Hub Immunisation Supply Chain Model.

The hub will serve both the South-West and South-South geopolitical zones.

Tinubu Highlights Healthcare Transformation

During the virtual commissioning ceremony, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the investments as one of the most extensive healthcare renewal efforts in modern Nigerian history.

“We are determined to give Nigerians the kind of care that, for too long, only those who could travel abroad enjoyed,” the President said.

He added, “From the rivers of the Delta to the streets of Lagos, from rural Sokoto to tertiary Maiduguri, our emergency response system must work as one. Today, we put another major piece of that system in place.”

The President also praised the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, NEMSAS management, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the World Bank, the Gates Foundation, eHealth Africa, state governments, and federal teaching hospitals for supporting the projects.

Nearly 3,000 Primary Health Centres Revitalised

Data released by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare revealed significant progress under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

According to the ministry, nearly 3,000 primary healthcare centres have undergone revitalisation through the IMPACT programme over the past two years.

The government has also established 27 Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care sites nationwide.

In addition, 1,602 Level 1 healthcare facilities and 1,360 Level 2 healthcare facilities have received upgrades across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

These improvements form part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve medical outcomes for millions of Nigerians.

The Tinubu Health Projects programme represents a major investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Through new hospitals, specialised laboratories, emergency response fleets, rehabilitation centres, and primary healthcare upgrades, the government aims to improve healthcare access nationwide.

With thousands of healthcare facilities already revitalised and additional projects underway, the initiative could play a significant role in strengthening healthcare services and expanding medical access for communities across the country.
