A major traditional leadership transition took place in Yobe State following a swift executive decision by the state government. Specifically, the news that Gov Buni appoints new Emir of Ngazargamu marks an important fresh chapter for the ancient kingdom. Governor Mai Mala Buni approved the immediate installation of Alhaji Yerima Ibn Mahmud to lead the historical domain. The official announcement came through a public statement issued on Friday by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje.
The sudden royal restructuring occurred less than 24 hours after the community laid their previous paramount ruler to rest. The new monarch successfully succeeds the late leader, Alhaji Tijjani Ibn Saleh Geidam, who recently passed away in Egypt. The former traditional father died in a foreign medical facility following a prolonged illness. Consequently, thousands of mourners, state dignitaries, and fellow traditional rulers gathered in Damaturu on Thursday to observe his final funeral rites.
Before this major elevation, Alhaji Yerima Ibn Mahmud served the local kingdom as the Turakin Ngazargamu for 16 years. Furthermore, the experienced administrator previously represented his local constituency as an elected member of the Yobe State House of Assembly. He also built an extensive career within civil governance by occupying several critical positions over the past decades. For instance, he previously served as an active member of the Yobe State Executive Council.
In addition to his legislative background, the newly selected leader previously worked as the state Commissioner for Livestock Development. Therefore, Governor Buni expressed immense confidence in the ruler’s broad administrative background and capacity to foster community unity. While congratulating the citizens of the territory, the governor noted that the sovereign must provide purposeful leadership. He strongly urged the incoming traditional ruler to deploy his deep public service insights to protect harmonious coexistence.
Governor Buni also emphasized that the royal stool should focus heavily on driving socio-economic growth across the state. At the same time, he appealed directly to local residents to support their new traditional father completely as he begins his official duties. He stressed that collective community cooperation remains absolutely essential to sustain long-term regional prosperity. Ultimately, this ancient kingdom stands as one of the most prominent traditional institutions in the North, boasting a rich heritage that links directly to the historic Kanem-Borno Empire.
