A Nigerian family has reunited after more than three decades apart, thanks to a social media campaign that touched thousands across Nigeria and Cameroon. The family reunites after 30 years story began with a daughter’s emotional appeal and ended with a reunion many believed would never happen.
Lister Matthew Osas launched the online search after watching her mother live with the pain of losing three children for more than 30 years. Through a series of heartfelt videos, she appealed to Nigerians, Cameroonians, bloggers, influencers, and social media users to help locate the siblings her mother had not seen since the early 1990s.
According to Osas, the heartbreaking story started long before she was born. Before meeting Osas’ father, her mother was in a relationship with Alfred Dibong Mandeng, a Cameroonian from Douala. Although they never married and her mother never travelled to Cameroon or met his family, the couple lived together in Nigeria and raised five children.
Sadly, two of the children died at a young age. The surviving children were Victoria, Maxwell, and Antonia Dibong Mandeng.
The family lived in Kaduna during the early 1990s. Osas’ mother worked as a clerk at a hospital. One morning, she left for work after leaving the children in their father’s care. However, everything changed before she returned home.
When she arrived, the house was empty.
Alfred had disappeared with the three children.
At the time, Victoria was about six years old. Maxwell was four, while Antonia was only two or three years old.
Despite the shock, their mother refused to give up. She searched tirelessly and eventually discovered that Alfred had moved to another location within Nigeria.
Hope returned briefly when she tracked them down. Unfortunately, she stepped out for only a few minutes. Before she returned, Alfred had disappeared again with the children.
This time, there was no trace.
The family believed he had taken the children across the border to Cameroon. From that moment, their mother never saw them again.
“From that time till now… my mom has not seen her three children,” Osas said in one of the videos.
She described the incident as “pure wickedness” and said the emotional wounds never healed.
“I’ve seen her cry at different times because of this,” she said. “She tries to hide it from me, but I still see.”
Even though her mother continued with life and raised another child, the pain remained. According to Osas, she quietly carried that heartbreak every day while hoping she would one day find her missing children.
“My mom deserves some kind of closure before she leaves this world,” Osas said. “Three children, guys. Three children.”
On July 31, 2026, Osas decided that her mother’s silence had lasted long enough.
She recorded emotional videos and shared every detail her mother could remember about the missing children and their father.
Her appeal reached people in both Nigeria and Cameroon. In addition, she urged bloggers, influencers, and ordinary social media users to share the story as widely as possible.
“Please help me. Help my mum,” she pleaded.
“I’ve watched my mom suffer. No one has ever helped her.”
Within hours, the videos spread across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and several other social media platforms.
Soon, strangers began offering help.
Some Cameroonians sent messages of encouragement. Others volunteered to make enquiries in local communities. Several people searched online for possible clues, while others shared the videos with even larger audiences.
Before long, the campaign started producing results.
Osas came across Instagram accounts that appeared to belong to two of her now-adult siblings. Although she did not know if the accounts were genuine, she promised to continue searching until she found her brother and sisters.
The breakthrough arrived much sooner than anyone expected.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, just two days after launching the search, Osas successfully connected with all three siblings.
A day later, she shared the emotional update online.
She revealed that they spent almost three hours talking on the phone.
“I was able to connect with them yesterday,” she said.
“The best thing about this is that it didn’t feel like I was meeting strangers. It feels like we were searching for each other.”
For her mother, the phone call brought the closure she had waited more than 30 years to receive.
The family also discovered something unexpected.
Victoria, Maxwell, and Antonia were all alive and well. Even more touching, Osas learned that her mother had become a grandmother to 11 grandchildren.
“I don’t think I’ll ever forget the 1st of August 2026 in my life,” Osas said.
“For the longest time, I’ve been the only child. Knowing that I have two sisters and a brother, my God. It’s like I’m living in a dream, and I love it. My mother has 11 grandchildren.”
The emotional reunion quickly became a celebration shared by thousands of people who had followed the search online.
After reconnecting with her siblings, Osas thanked everyone who had played a role in making the reunion possible.
She expressed gratitude to the Cameroonian community, Nigerian bloggers, influencers, and countless social media users who shared the videos, searched for information, prayed for the family, or simply offered words of encouragement.
“You will never lack help,” she said.
