The Federal Government has launched the YouthCred loan scheme to improve access to credit for young Nigerians. The initiative, introduced by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), offers loans ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦5 million.

The YouthCred loan scheme targets three categories of young Nigerians. These include serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, salaried employees, and entrepreneurs. Eligible applicants must be between 18 and 39 years old.

According to CREDICORP, the programme aims to introduce young Nigerians to formal credit. It also helps participants build strong credit histories. Over time, this approach could improve their access to larger financial opportunities.

The scheme features three loan products. Each product serves a specific category of borrowers.

The first option is the Corper Credit programme. Only serving NYSC members can apply for it. Borrowers can repay the loan within six months. They must also complete financial literacy training before accessing the facility. CREDICORP says borrowers who repay on time can qualify for higher loan amounts in the future.

The second option is the Employed Youth Credit. It targets salaried workers between 18 and 39 years old. The loan comes with a repayment period of up to 12 months. Borrowers can use the funds for personal purchases and other financial needs. Furthermore, a strong repayment record can unlock larger credit facilities.

The third option is the Youth Entrepreneurs Credit. It supports young business owners who want to grow their businesses. Entrepreneurs can use the loan for working capital, equipment purchases, or business expansion. The facility also offers a repayment period of up to 12 months.

One of the biggest advantages of the YouthCred loan scheme is that applicants do not need collateral or guarantors. Instead, CREDICORP encourages responsible borrowing through financial education. Every applicant must complete financial literacy modules before receiving a loan.

According to the agency, successful applicants receive their loans within minutes after approval. Automatic debit arrangements collect the repayments. However, borrowers can repay their loans ahead of schedule without penalties.

CREDICORP says early repayment improves a borrower’s credit score. It also increases the chances of accessing larger loans in the future. However, borrowers who miss repayments risk lowering their credit scores and reducing future borrowing limits.

Beyond providing loans, the YouthCred loan scheme promotes responsible financial habits. The programme encourages participants to borrow only what they need. It also advises them to keep debt levels low and monitor their credit profiles through recognised Nigerian credit bureaus.

The initiative forms part of CREDICORP’s broader effort to expand responsible consumer lending across Nigeria. It focuses especially on young people with little or no previous credit history.

Through the YouthCred loan scheme, the Federal Government hopes to improve financial inclusion and expand access to affordable credit. Officials also believe the programme will encourage responsible borrowing while helping young Nigerians build stronger financial futures.
