Nigerian Army troops have carried out a major operation in Enugu State, targeting suspected IPOB and ESN fighters. The mission led to the recovery of weapons, explosives, and ransom money linked to kidnapping activities
The operation took place in Ajali Forest in Ezeagu Local Government Area, where troops under Operation Eastern Sanity moved against identified criminal hideouts. According to the Army, the mission was supported by the air component of Operation Udo Ka, allowing forces to gain control of the area.
During the raid, the fighters were forced to retreat, leaving behind key items. Among the recovered materials was an anti tank improvised explosive device, which was later secured by an explosives disposal team. The Army described the retreat as disorganised, noting that several assets were abandoned in the process.
Following the operation, troops established control of the area and began further clearance efforts to remove any remaining threats. The military says these follow up actions are aimed at completely dismantling the network operating within the forest.
In a separate operation, troops from the 82 Division Garrison acted on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services. This led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area.
A search of the suspect’s residence uncovered a pump action rifle and two million naira believed to be proceeds from kidnapping. The Army stated that this development has weakened both the operational strength and financial capacity of the group.
The suspect, along with the recovered items, has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.
Military authorities say ongoing operations in the South East continue to reduce the ability of these groups to regroup or carry out attacks. They also reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and stability in the region.
The latest operations highlight ongoing efforts by the military to tackle insecurity in the South East and disrupt criminal activities at their roots.
