How innovation and sustainability could reshape Nigeria’s most powerful industry
For decades, Nigeria’s economic story has been written in crude oil, gas flares, and mineral wealth. The extractive industry has powered government revenues and exports, yet growth has not translated into proportional improvements in human well-being.“Nigeria must rethink its development model or risk deepening the very challenges its resource wealth was meant to solve.”
Nigeria’s dependence on oil and gas remains both a strength and a vulnerability. While it fuels GDP growth, it has also been linked to environmental degradation, economic volatility, and social inequality. This contradiction reflects the ‘resource curse’—where resource-rich nations struggle to convert wealth into broad-based development. Unfortunately in a country like Nigeria weak regulatory systems have worsened these effects in and it seems like there is no way out of the morass, especially for Indigenous populations.
However, renewable energy adoption offers a pathway to reduce environmental harm while improving long-term resilience. Renewable energy adoption can be driven by technology to make an appreciable impact. Technology, especially ICT, is a key driver of transformation. It improves healthcare access, financial inclusion, and economic participation.Rather than replace extractive industries, technology can transform them, improving efficiency, transparency, and environmental outcomes.
Furthermore, Strong governance is essential. Transparency, accountability, and inclusion, especially for host communities, must be prioritized.
Nigeria faces a critical moment as global energy transitions accelerate. Policy choices today will determine whether the country adapts or falls behind.Nigeria’s future cannot be built on extraction alone. Technology and sustainability offer a path toward a more inclusive and resilient economy.
