The Sahara Go Recycling Hub has expanded into Northern Nigeria with the launch of a new facility in Masaka, Nasarawa State. The initiative, spearheaded by Sahara Group Foundation, aims to increase access to structured recycling while creating economic opportunities for residents.
The project was delivered in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority. It represents another milestone in efforts to promote sustainable environmental practices across Nigeria.
Sahara Group Foundation Takes Recycling Initiative North
Sahara Group Foundation commissioned the new facility to deepen recycling activities in communities across Northern Nigeria.
The organisation partnered with the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority to establish the centre.
Through the programme, recyclable materials are diverted from landfills. In addition, residents gain access to income opportunities linked to waste collection and processing.
According to the foundation, the initiative turns waste management into an avenue for environmental awareness and economic empowerment.
Masaka Facility Creates Opportunities for Communities
Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, described the new centre as an important step in extending sustainable waste solutions nationwide.
She said the project demonstrates how partnerships can deliver cleaner surroundings and improved livelihoods.
“Masaka represents an important next step in expanding access to sustainable waste management across Nigeria,” Menakaya said.

The commissioning ceremony attracted representatives of Sahara Group and Sahara Group Foundation. Officials from NASAWAMSA, local government leaders, volunteers, partners and community members also attended the event.
Their presence reflected broad support for the initiative.
NASAWAMSA Highlights Environmental and Economic Benefits
Director of Waste Management at the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, Mr. Ishaku Ibrahim, praised the partnership.
He noted that the project addresses environmental concerns while creating new economic prospects for residents.
“This hub brings a practical solution to waste challenges in Masaka and surrounding communities,” he said.
“Beyond improving environmental outcomes, it creates a pathway for residents to participate in a cleaner future while deriving economic value from recyclable materials. We are proud to partner Sahara Group Foundation on this important step for Nasarawa State.”
According to stakeholders, the centre will encourage responsible waste disposal and strengthen sustainability efforts in the state.
Initiative Records Impact Across Nigeria
Since its introduction, the Sahara Go Recycling programme has generated measurable social and environmental benefits.
The initiative has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of materials.
It has also supported over 2,000 livelihoods directly and indirectly. Beneficiaries operate across collection, sorting, transportation and community-based enterprises.
Furthermore, the programme has helped reshape public attitudes toward recycling, especially in underserved communities.
Menakaya said collaboration and innovation remain critical to building resilient communities.
She added that local participation will continue to drive the programme’s success.
Foundation Plans Wider Expansion
Sahara Group Foundation said it intends to extend the Sahara Go Recycling programme to more communities across Nigeria.
