The Surveyors’ Council of Nigeria (SURCON) has urged Nigerians to verify the registration status of surveyors before engaging them in land acquisition and property transactions, stressing the council’s role in regulating the profession.

SURCON President, Moshood Akinwande, gave the advice during a two-day working visit to Ogun State, where he encouraged members of the public to seek the services of surveyors registered with the council when buying or acquiring landed property.

According to a statement issued by the association on Saturday, Akinwande made the appeal in Abeokuta during the visit, which was organised at the invitation of the Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Ogun State Branch, Abiodun Liadi.

SURCON highlights regulatory powers

Akinwande said the authority to make laws governing surveying, which was previously vested in state governments and Houses of Assembly, now rests with SURCON.

He explained that the council is responsible for registering surveyors, regulating the profession in all its ramifications and disciplining practitioners found guilty of professional misconduct.

The advisory places emphasis on the importance of engaging properly registered professionals when undertaking land transactions, where accurate surveying is an essential part of the process.

President attends geoinformation investiture

Akinwande’s visit to Ogun State also coincided with the investiture ceremony of Quadri Rabiu as Chairman of the Geoinformation Society of Nigeria. The SURCON president attended the event as a guest of honour.

The two-day visit concluded with a meeting between Akinwande and the Body of Fellows of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors in Ogun State.
