The Nigerian Navy 70th Anniversary celebration reached a major milestone on Monday as President Bola Tinubu commissioned three new naval vessels and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maritime security. The event took place during the 2026 International Fleet Review at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos.
The commissioning ceremony formed part of activities marking seven decades of service by the Nigerian Navy. It also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime defence capabilities.
Tinubu Commissions Three New Naval Vessels
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu served as the reviewing officer during the fleet review ceremony.
As part of the event, he commissioned three newly acquired naval platforms: NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila, and NNS Gurara.
The President described the Nigerian Navy as a vital institution that has protected Nigeria’s maritime interests for 70 years.
He praised the service for its role in safeguarding territorial waters and supporting regional stability.
Navy Commended for Combating Maritime Crimes
Speaking at the ceremony, Tinubu applauded the Navy’s achievements in tackling piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, maritime smuggling, and other transnational crimes.
According to the President, these operations have produced significant security and economic benefits for the country.
He stated that the Navy’s efforts have helped increase oil production, boost government revenue, and strengthen investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The President also commended naval personnel for their professionalism and dedication in carrying out complex security operations.
Contributions Extend Beyond Maritime Security
Tinubu noted that the Nigerian Navy has expanded its role beyond maritime operations.
He praised the service for supporting counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts across various parts of the country.
Particular recognition went to the Navy’s Special Boat Service, which he said has demonstrated courage and professionalism during critical missions.
The President also highlighted the deployment of Nigerian Navy Marines to operational theatres. According to him, the move will contribute to ongoing military successes nationwide.
“Indeed, the Nigerian Navy has become an indispensable pillar of both national and regional security,” he said.
Maritime Security Supports Economic Growth
The President described Nigeria’s maritime environment as one of the nation’s most strategic assets.
He noted that the country’s waterways play a critical role in international trade and economic development.
As a result, protecting maritime resources remains essential to national prosperity.
Tinubu credited the Navy with successfully integrating surveillance technology, rapid-response capabilities, and enforcement operations.
He said these measures have significantly reduced piracy and crude oil theft while improving security in coastal communities.
“These achievements have enhanced the security of our littoral communities and contributed to increased oil production, thereby supporting national economic growth,” the President stated.
Government Pledges Continued Investment
The theme of the celebration, “Seven Decades of Operational Excellence,” reflected the Navy’s achievements over the years.
Tinubu said the theme accurately represents the service’s operational record rather than serving as a symbolic slogan.
He expressed confidence that the Navy would remain a key driver of Nigeria’s growing blue economy.
Furthermore, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in modern vessels, advanced technologies, personnel welfare, training programmes, and capacity development.
He urged naval officers and personnel to remain dedicated to patriotism and national service.
Naval Chief Highlights Recent Achievements
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, attributed recent successes to strong government support and strategic investments.
According to him, the acquisition of modern platforms and improved surveillance systems has strengthened Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.
He also highlighted enhanced cooperation among security agencies as a major factor behind recent operational achievements.
Abbas explained that these improvements have enabled the Navy to intensify efforts against piracy, sea robbery, illegal fishing, and crude oil theft throughout the Gulf of Guinea.
The naval chief pledged continued loyalty to the Constitution and reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests.
He also honoured past and present naval personnel whose sacrifices helped build the service into a formidable maritime force.
Dignitaries Attend Historic Fleet Review
The anniversary celebration attracted senior government officials, military leaders, foreign delegates, and regional naval representatives.
Among those present were Babajide Sanwo-Olu, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Bello Matawalle, and Nuhu Ribadu.
Also in attendance were military service chiefs, including senior representatives of the Armed Forces and security agencies.
Naval leaders from Ghana, Benin, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire joined the celebration alongside delegations from Europe and former service chiefs.
Their presence underscored the significance of the event within the region’s maritime security community.
